Top Indian Recruiters: ‘Routine jobs have given way to entrepreneurship,’ says VGSoM placements’ chairperson

Careers360: How is the placement scenario evolving on Indian campuses?
Dr. Prabina Rajib: The past decade has seen a tremendous transition from a 9 to 5 job routine to entrepreneurship culture. Flexible work environments, opportunities for faster career growth and roles with greater responsibility are all attracting talent into start-ups. Moreover, the course structure of B-School offers students the flexibility to pick subjects which are in-line with their product idea and the plethora of clubs and committees push them to come up with workable business plans. This has instilled confidence and ability in students to secure successful placements.

 

Careers360: Which were the top recruiters at VGSoM?
Dr. Prabina Rajib: IBM recruited the maximum number of students from our campus. Some of the top recruiters for VGSoM are Google, Titan, McKinsey, NI, IBM, Oracle, Deloitte, PwC, Accenture, Amazon, Rolls Royce, Maersk Line, Myntra, Mercedes, Spencer’s Retail, Cognizant Business Consulting, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Tata Motors.

 

Careers360: What is the placement strategy that VGSoM has adopted so that students get better placement offers?
Dr. Prabina Rajib: We have maintained close liaison with industry by holding guest lectures by eminent speakers through a series of guest lectures. Furthermore, we strive in establishing as well as maintaining close alliance with our alumni. More importantly, we focus on constantly improving the choice of elective subjects and offer new electives in line with industry requirements.

 

Careers360: Do you have any programmes for students to hone their skills?
Dr. Prabina Rajib: Apart from academics, MBA students participate in numerous social and cultural events at both undergraduate and postgraduate level organized by various student clubs of IIT Kharagpur. Such events offer them a big panorama to hone their leadership and people management skills. These events range from drama, dance, quiz, music, photography, debate, rangoli and various sports activities like cricket, football, swimming, basketball, tennis to raising funds for and teaching underprivileged students. 

 

Careers360: Any unique placement practice that you would like to share?
Dr. Prabina Rajib: Encouragement to take part in all major campus activities held by prominent companies is the goal that we are focusing on. Applied Management Research Project (AMRP) undertaken during second year of MBA provides an opportunity to students to face live challenges. As part of this project, students take up live projects offered by companies such as Tiger Analytics, Snapdeal, Xiaomi, Maersk Line, Emami, Reckitt Benckiser etc. It gives them an opportunity to face live challenges which eventually help them achieving the learning curve. Huge participation in competitions like Titan Elevate, CFA Research Challenge, Bloomberg Market Concept, Deloitte Maverick, RB Mavericks, Amazon Ace Challenge, Yes Bank Transformation Series, EY Knowledge Quiz have given the students opportunities to learn from the peer group and increase visibility in the corporate world.
