Unique Courses 2016: Career opportunities in Mobile App Development

Mobile-App-DevelopmentIndia’s mobile economy has seen tremendous growth in the past two years, with mobile app downloads and time spent on app more than doubling since 2014. App Annie, a reputed business intelligence company that provides analytic service and market intelligence, predicts a continued growth for India’s mobile market, with app store downloads to reach 20.1 billion by 2020 - showing a growth rate of 92%. One of the fastest-growing sectors is retail, with time spent on apps growing 11 times from 2014 to 2016. Revenue has also grown and mobile commerce is taking home an increasing portion of overall in-app spend.

A study published by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations estimates direct employment in this industry to range between 1,51,230 and 1,59, 010 by 2016. Apps currently account for 75,000 jobs in India. Accordingly, the increase in direct employment attributable to India’s App economy is expected to range between 76,230 and 84,010 jobs from 2014 to 2016. “At present there are between 50-70 thousand professional mobile app developers in India, which is absolutely insufficient. By 2020 we will have over billion phones connected on Internet. My estimate is that we will need 20 million app developers at that time,” says Subho Ray, President, IAMAI.

What is an App?

In technical terminology ‘Apps’ are bite-sized software programmes called mobile software applications or popularly ‘apps’ which are designed to run on smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices. These apps use data-stream either continuously or on a one-off basis to deliver information and perform specific functions. Apps have revolutionized the way mobile phones are used, enabling users in social networking, gaming, navigation, health, education, utilities etc.

Mobile App courses

Google recently launched the Android Skilling programme in India that aims to train two million mobile developers. This will be made available across public and private universities and training institutes of the National Skill Development Corporation of India. It will also be available free of charge on NPTEL (an initiative of the IITs and IISc) as part of its online Mobile Computing course. Additionally, Google has tied up with training partners like Edureka, Koenig, Manipal Global, Simplilearn, Udacity and UpGrad who will operate as Authorized Android Training Partners in India.

Speaking at the launch, Caesar Sengupta, VP, Product Management at Google said, “By building a world-class curriculum and making it easily accessible to millions of students and developers in India, we want to contribute to the Skill India initiative and help make India the global leader in mobile app development.”

India is expected to have the largest developer population globally, overtaking the US, by 2018, with four million developers. But today only 25 percent of developers are building for mobile. We believe India is uniquely placed to innovate and shape the Internet experience of billions of users who are and will come online on the mobile platform.

Google will also open-source all Android Developer Fundamentals practicals and courseware and make them available to everyone for free.

What do you learn?

A number of Indian universities offer specialization in undergraduate programmes (BCA, B.Tech) in Mobile Applications (See Table). In BCA, in addition to traditional subjects the specialized courses offer in-demand skills in the mobile applications domain. The course provides students with fundamental knowledge of all aspects of mobile technology with emphasis on application development for Android, according to industry requirements.

In the B.Tech programme, in addition to Computer Science and mobile application development fundamentals, the course also provides exposure to software development, mobile networks, mobile ecosystems, and more. Students not only learn in the classroom but also through guest lecture and workshops. They also learn through mandatory industry internships and projects.

The mobile app programmes equip students to master the practical and theoretical aspects of virtualization technologies, cloud technologies, data centres, networking, and operating systems. It also helps them gain valuable industry inputs and insights into the process of creating cutting-edge mobile technology and develop skills to independently analyse, design, develop, deploy, and troubleshoot mobile applications and services.
